A backlit stone feature wall is the single highest-impact thing you can put in a restaurant, bar, or hotel lobby. It works because it does two jobs at once: it is the light source and it is the finish. Guests do not read it as "lighting." They read it as a wall made of glowing rock, and they photograph it.

They also notice immediately when it is done badly. Hot spots. Visible stripes. A slab that is bright in the middle and grey at the edges. Every one of those failures traces back to the same thing — not the stone, but the panel behind it.

What actually makes a backlit stone feature wall work

Natural stone is a terrible diffuser. Onyx, translucent marble, agate and quartzite all vary in thickness and density across a single slab, and the veining that makes them beautiful is exactly what makes them uneven when lit. Point a strip of LEDs at the back and the stone will faithfully broadcast every gap between diodes.

The fix is even, edge-to-edge illumination across the entire back face — a continuous plane of light with no bright or dark zones. That is what our acrylic light panels and backlit light panels are built to deliver.

There are two ways to get there, and picking the right one is most of the job.

Acrylic light panels (edge-lit)

Ultra-thin panels with LEDs around the perimeter, firing into a laser-etched acrylic sheet that redistributes light across the face. Available up to 48" × 96", RGB optional.

Use these when depth is tight — a bar front, a reception desk face, a millwork panel where you have an inch or two behind the stone and nothing more. Edge-lit is the slimmest option we build, and for thinner, more translucent onyx it is often all you need.

Backlit light panels (direct-lit)

High-output aluminum panels with LED bars running throughout the body of the panel, not just the edges. No size limit.

Use these for large-format installations and for thicker or denser stone. A 12-foot bar front, a two-storey lobby feature wall, a slab that is 3/4" and heavily veined — those need real output pushed evenly across the whole face, and that is what a direct-lit panel does. If your slab is fighting you, this is the answer.

Both are made to the exact dimensions of your stone. We do not sell fixed sizes, so the panel is not something your installer has to cut down, gang together, or shim into place — it arrives as the piece your drawing specifies.

The specification details that decide the outcome

Measure the stone, not the opening. Panels are built to your dimensions, which means the dimensions have to be the real ones. Give us the finished slab size and the cavity depth you actually have behind it after substrate and adhesive.

Test your slab before you commit. Translucency varies enormously between and within stone types. Hold a work light behind an offcut in a dark room. If it glows warmly and evenly, edge-lit will likely serve. If it barely passes light or goes patchy, specify a direct-lit backlit panel.

Get the dimming right at design stage. Every panel we build is dimmable and works with a wall dimmer or a remote-controlled dimmer. In hospitality this matters more than anywhere else — the same bar front needs to hold its own at 11am with daylight in the room and again at 11pm when it is the brightest thing in the space. A feature wall you cannot dim is a feature wall that is wrong twice a day.

Plan the service access. Stone gets set with a rigid substrate and it does not come off casually. Our LEDs are rated for 50,000+ hours, but the panel behind a permanent stone install should still be reachable — through a removable millwork back panel, an access hatch in adjoining casework, or a stone frame designed to be demountable. Decide this before the mason arrives, not after.

Colour temperature carries the room. Warm white around 2700–3000K flatters honey, amber and caramel onyx and reads as hospitality. Cooler white pushes green and grey stone toward a colder, more clinical look — right for a spa, usually wrong for a bar. RGB is available on our acrylic panels if you want to shift the feature wall for seasons or events, though most hospitality clients land on a fixed warm white and stay there.

Where these installations go

Bar fronts. The most common request we get, and the best use of the technique. A backlit onyx bar front lights guests from below at exactly the angle that photographs well, and it makes the bar the visual anchor of the room without hanging anything from the ceiling.

Reception and host desks. Same principle, smaller footprint. A glowing desk face gives a lobby a focal point at arrival and doubles as wayfinding after dark.

Feature walls and back bars. Behind the bottle display, behind the banquette, or as a full-height lobby wall. This is where the no-size-limit backlit panels earn their place — a wall built from multiple slabs needs consistent output panel to panel, or the seams announce themselves.

Restaurant washrooms and vanities. A backlit stone vanity face is a low-cost, high-memory detail in a space where guests are already looking around.

Certification, warranty, and what shipping actually looks like

For commercial work the boring answers matter as much as the visual ones.

Every product we build is CSA/UL certified — North American electrical safety standards, no exceptions and no grey-market components. That is what your electrical inspector and your insurer will want to see, and it is not something you can retrofit onto an imported panel after the fact.

Every unit carries a 3-year warranty, and every unit ships with a UL/ETL-approved power supply sized with 20% extra capacity. The power supply is included — never a separate line item, never something your electrician has to source and match on site.
