Why the Straight Run Is Not Always the Answer

A wall-to-wall run does one thing decisively: it separates a space into two halves. That is exactly right when the two zones are of comparable size and you want a clean, symmetrical read — a living room and dining area sharing one long rectangle, for example.

It becomes the wrong instinct in three common situations. First, when one of the zones is much smaller than the other, a full-width partition makes the smaller side feel like a corridor. Second, when the room has only one window wall, a full run parallel to that wall can leave the far zone visually starved even though slats pass plenty of light. Third, when the division you actually want is around a piece of furniture rather than across the whole floor plate — a desk, a bed, a piano — a full-width run is simply more divider than the job needs.

The opening itself should be sized for how the space is used, not minimised. A generous gap of four feet or more keeps the two zones feeling connected; a narrower one reads as a threshold and increases the sense of separation. Either is valid, but the choice should be deliberate.

A stepped layout changes height along the run, typically dropping from full ceiling height over a walkway to a lower section over furniture, or following a sloped ceiling.
